Alexander (Alex) Herwig, Board President

Alexander (Alex) Herwig, RPh is a 3rd generation pharmacist whose strong family values stem from a background in independent pharmacy. A graduate of Ohio State University where he earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy, Alex carried on the independent pharmacy family tradition, purchasing Gulf Shore Apothecary in 2011, one of the oldest locally-owned community concierge pharmacies in the Naples area.

Alex operates Gulf Shore Apothecary as a family business alongside his wife, Jennifer, who is also a pharmacist. They are the proud parents of two children, Jordyn and Conrad, and enjoy tennis and family boating days when not caring for patients at either of their two Gulf Shore Apothecary locations.

Shane Abbot, Board Vice President

Shane Abbott, RPh earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida in 1998 and has practiced pharmacy in an independent pharmacy setting ever since.

The owner of Prescription Place pharmacy locations in Defuniak Springs and Niceville in northwestern Florida.

Shane became actively involved in state legislative activities in 2000, after experiencing the disparities between independent pharmacies and the large chains first-hand.

Shane and his wife, Holly, have 3 children, ages 20, 17, and 8. His eldest son, Tanner, is continuing in the family business attending pharmacy school at his dad’s alma mater. When he’s not practicing pharmacy or involved in legislative activities on behalf of the independent pharmacy industry, Shane and his family enjoy hobby farming, raising chickens and goats.

Dawn Butterfield RPh, Board Secretary

Dawn Butterfield, RPh, a lifelong Floridian, earned her Bachelor’s in Pharmacy from Auburn University in 1989. Her professional background spans the industry of pharmacy from clinical and hospital to retail and sales. She opened West Cocoa Pharmacy and Compounding in 2012.

In addition to running a small business pharmacy and caring for patients, Dawn volunteers as the Board Vice President for the national organization Pharmacists United for Truth & Transparency and assists local government and unions with healthcare plan decision-making processes.

When she’s not volunteering or caring for patients, Dawn and her partner Doc enjoy reading, walking, and playing with their dog RJ.

Kevin J. Duane, Board Treasurer

Kevin J. Duane, PharmD, is the owner of Panama Pharmacy in Jacksonville. A graduate of the University of Florida, he earned his doctorate from UF’s College of Pharmacy in 2013. In 2018 he was the recipient of UF’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award for establishing senior center community outreach programs in underserved areas of Jacksonville.

Kevin purchased Panama Pharmacy in 2016, where he continues his outreach services, including providing basic self-care and education, screenings, and vaccinations. Panama Pharmacy regularly donates supplies to the Muslim American Social Services Care Clinic in Jacksonville to assist with their free healthcare services.

Kevin married his high school sweetheart in 2011 and is the proud father of a 4-year-old daughter. When not practicing pharmacy, he enjoys sports, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Vikram B. Rao, MS, CPh, Founding Member

Vikram Rao earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy from Bangalore University in 1999 and his Masters of Science in Industrial Pharmacy from Long Island University in 2002. After graduation, he began working his way up as a pharmacist with Eckerds Drugs in Bradenton, Florida, and now owns multiple Eckerds Pharmacy locations throughout the Tampa Bay area.

In addition to actively owning and operating his pharmacy locations over the past 10 years, Vikram also works as a Registered Pharmacy Technician Training. Provider and volunteers as the Board President for the Independent Pharmacy Association Southeast. When he is not volunteering his time or caring for patients, he enjoys reading up on Civics and Technology and spending time with his wife and two teenage sons.

James A. Wright, Founding Member

James (Jay) Wright is a 7th generation Floridian and 2nd generation pharmacist. He earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Florida in 2008 and went on to become certified in Pharmaceutical Compounding Science and Prescription Hormone Compounding by Medisca, UF, and the ACHE.

Keeping with his family tradition, Jay opened Five Points Pharmacy & Wellness in 2012. When he’s not taking care of patients Jay enjoys competing in triathlons, bonsai cultivation, jet-skiing, and playing on the water with his wife and two young daughters.
